PROGRAM: RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
The
Department of Biostatistics offers teaching and research assistantships to its
PhD students on a competitive basis. All PhD applicants (US and international)
are ranked based upon their merits; top candidates are offered assistantships
which last five years and include full tuition, health insurance, and (for the
2020-21 academic year) a living stipend starting from $25,000 per year over the
five years of study. In exchange, students are required to apprentice with
faculty as research and teaching assistants for up to 19 hours per week.
Students find the teaching and research assistantships to be the most valuable
part of their PhD experience.
Fully-funded
PhD candidates are guaranteed a research assistantship during their first five
academic years; the guaranteed level of funding for the 2020-21 academic year
is $25,000. Assistantships are funded through a variety of research grants,
training grants, departmental endowment income and general funds. It is
important that each student know the source of his/her funding and understand
the responsibilities that come with it. Students should meet with their
academic advisors on a regular basis to identify opportunities and discuss
progress of ongoing assignments. All JHU employment most be coordinated through
the Biostatistics administration and be approved by the student's academic
advisor. Full-time students, regardless of citizenship, may not work more than
19 hours per week during the academic year. For questions, please contact Fallon Bachman, departmental administrator.
International
students with questions regarding their work eligibility should contact the Office of International
Services or Fallon Bachman.
