On Friday, April 30,
2004, we gathered at the Harbourtowne Golf Resort and
Conference Center in St. Michael's, Maryland for our annual
departmental retreat. We kicked off the weekend with a
poster session, where students and faculty discussed each
other's work, and
plenty of Hawaiian
shirts.
After dinner, it was time for an exercise in cinéma
vérité with the Eastern Shore premiere of
Steve Goodman's magnum opus, Behind the Tan Door -- Getting Ahead
in Academia. We laughed, we cried, it was easy to
see why it wowed 'em at Cannes.
On Saturday May 1, the morning was spent in strategic planning,
considering recommendations from the School's Biostatistics
Review Committee and developing action
items based on those recommendations. Lunch was time for
basking in the sun and enjoying the
breezes off the Chesapeake Bay, then it was back to the conference
room for a glimpse of the future of statistics with
faculty and student presentations.
Saturday night was all about beer, bonding, and
bathrobes
(not necessarily in that order). Stay tuned for
information about next year's retreat...
