We left Genoa and drove through the mountains to the resort town of Digne les Bains in France. Just north of the town were two attractions -- dinosaur remains and a geology park. We saw an ichthyosaur skeleton, bird foot prints left in the sand thousands of years ago, and a wall full of ammonite fossils. We then hiked to the top of a hill to see the velodrome -- a bizarre curved rock formation.
From Digne les Bains, we headed back into Italy to Ventimiglia where we saw the Balzi Rossi -- caves in which prehistoric man lived. The museum was good, but the caves themselves were disappointing. The highlight was a cave painting of a horse that was preserved in the museum. Our hotel was right on the beach, so we were able to take a brief swim in the Mediterrean before dinner.
