Casterino - Refuge Fontanalbe

We drove up into the mountains near St. Dalmas de Tende. Our hike began at a parking lot just north of Casterino. It was a short climb along a dirt road up to the Refuge Fontanalbe. We dropped our packs there and walked further up to a group of rock carvings made during the Bronze and Copper Ages. It was a nice little hike and most of the carvings had a sign explaining them. Unfortunately the signs were only in French. On the walk back, we saw an extremely fat marmot. The refuge is small but comfortable and run by an eccentric woman. The food was the best we had during this trip.
