After having our fill of museums, we headed into the mountains. It was a long drive through Northern Spain complete with winding roads and mountain tunnels. We parked below the Cavallers dam just north of Caldes de Boi.
Our hike began with a climb up to the dam. From there, the trail followed the edge of the lake and then climbed up to the Refugi Joan Ventosa I Calvell. We had to hurry to make it there by 8pm for dinner. The refuge was crowded; most people slept upstairs in two rows of bunk beds, but a few slept on the tables downstairs. Perched above Estany Negre, the refuge commands a spectacular view of the lake and valley below.
